DANVILLE, Ky. – A strong first half propelled the Kenyon College Lords to a 2-0 shutout win against Spalding University (Ky.) on Friday night on the campus of Centre College. The Lords won their third straight, improved to 4-1 overall and handed Spalding (4-1-1) its first loss of the season in the process.
An early on-target look from Golden Eagles forward Kornell Hilliard proved to be Spalding's best chance in the first stanza as the Lords responded after that to take control.
At the 6:10 mark, senior classmates
Gunner Found and
Philippe Stengel teamed up to provide all the scoring needed.
Found drove to the left corner and crossed a pass to Stengel who finished around the right post. It was Stengel's first goal of the season. Kenyon added to its lead a little over 16 minutes later.
A near-perfect through ball from freshman
Sebastian Brylka was picked up by second-year
Sam Carson who shot from near the top of the 18. That goal, Carson's second of the year, doubled the Lords' advantage.
In the second half, Kenyon turned to its second and third wave of players to preserve the lead. While the play was sluggish, the Lords held their lead and watched as goalies
Ian McInturf and
Lev Rosenbush each recorded saves in the final 30 minutes of competition.
Tomorrow, Kenyon will play the host Centre Colonels at 7:30 p.m. at Amend Field.
