GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies scored on a penalty stroke Wednesday to chalk up a 1-0 non-conference win over the visiting Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University. The victory carried extra meaning for
Jacque DeMarco, who reached the 100-win milestone as Kenyon's head coach.
DeMarco took over the Kenyon program prior to the 2013 season and possesses a career coaching record of 100-45. Included within that record are three regular-season North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) titles, two NCAC Tournament titles, as well as two appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The latest win for DeMarco and the Ladies didn't come easy. Both teams wore out the midfield Wednesday and kept the other from generating any significant scoring opportunities. The first quarter, in fact, blew by without either team recording a shot.
Kenyon finally broke through with its first chance late in the second quarter. With less than a minute left, junior
Tara Shetty uncorked a couple of shots near the left side of the Ohio Wesleyan cage. Goalkeeper Marie Overing was there to make a save on both of them and sent the game to halftime in a scoreless draw.
Early in the third quarter, the Battling Bishops registered their first shot, which came off the stick of Veronica Hardman and sailed wide left.
Later in the third, an Ohio Wesleyan player was called for using her foot in front of the goal line. The result was a penalty stroke for Kenyon. Freshman
Bella Kern stepped up for the Ladies and fired her shot past Overing and into the lower right corner of the cage.
That goal, Kern's third of the season, was all Kenyon would need. The Ladies had just four shots and five penalty corners for the game, but the defense held Ohio Wesleyan to just two shots and two penalty corners.
The final result moved both teams' records to 4-2. The two teams will meet again on October 23 at Ohio Wesleyan. That contest will be counted as an NCAC game.
