GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team got an early goal Saturday against the visiting Rhodes College Lynx. From there, the defense took over, allowing just one shot during a 2-0 non-conference win on the Field at Benson Bowl.
The Ladies defense has now yielded just three shots in its last three games combined. For the season, the Ladies are out-shooting opponents, 93-56.
It took just one shot for Kenyon to get its first goal against the Lynx. About seven minutes into the game, sophomore
Isabella Meneguzzi inserted a penalty corner. The ball made its way to the top of the circle, where senior
Hannah Sklar took a rip at it. As she fired away, Meneguzzi moved toward the left post of the Rhodes' cage and redirected Sklar's shot past Lynx goalkeeper Nina Migneco.
The score remained 1-0 until Kenyon stuck again about two minutes into the second half of play. This time, junior
Olivia O'Connell gained control of the ball near the Rhodes end line. She then fired a pass from the right side. As the ball crossed the goal mouth, sophomore
Sarah Metzmaier slapped it by Migneco for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Back in the Kenyon goal, freshman
Payton Doan benefitted from the tough defense in front of her, while earning her third shutout of the season. In seven games and three starts this season, Doan has manufactured a 0.20 goals against average with 13 saves.
Rhodes slipped to 3-1 with the loss. Kenyon, winner of four straight, improved to 5-2.
