WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Injury and illness continue to plague the Kenyon College volleyball team, which had to modify its lineup once again Wednesday night at Otterbein University. The Ladies' attack did its best to adapt to the changes, but the host Cardinals went on to whip up a 3-0 non-conference win.
Otterbein (13-1) turned to junior Tate Eppard to lead the way and she responded with 14 kills, four blocks and a pair of service aces. Fellow junior, Dasha Bruyako, added 11 kills for the Cardinals, giving that front-row duo more kills than the entire Kenyon team.
Kenyon (2-7) had 19 kills throughout the match. Seven of them came from senior
Mackenzie Bruzzio and four came from junior
Lauren Limbach. Seniors
Haley Witschey and
Maleah Miller added three kills apiece.
The Ladies struggled in the first two sets, producing negative attack percentages and a combined nine kills in a pair of 25-14 losses. To their credit, however, they came back strong in the third set, ringing up 10 kills and a .286 attack percentage.
During that third set, the Ladies jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Otterbein later gained control, going ahead 17-13, but Kenyon rallied to tie things up at 19-19 and then regained the lead at 20-19. Three straight kills from Eppard, however, stopped the Ladies' momentum. Two more kills from Bruyako got the Cardinals to match point, before they finally put Kenyon away, 25-23.
In addition to her three kills, Miller had a game-high five blocks for the Ladies.
Ellie Luciani had a team-high 14 digs and
Jac Cousineau had a team-best six assists.
Kenyon's difficult schedule does not let up. The Ladies' next match is Saturday at Ohio Northern University, a team that has an 8-3 record and is ranked No. 16 in the latest national AVCA poll.
