ADA, Ohio – The Kenyon College volleyball team lost twice in Saturday's tri-match at Ohio Northern University. The Ladies dropped the first match to the host and No. 16-ranked Polar Bears 25-15, 25-16, 25-17. They got back on track with a first-set win against Defiance College, but the Yellow Jackets rallied to claim a 17-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 victory.
Against Ohio Northern (10-3), senior
Mackenzie Bruzzio led the Ladies with team-high tallies of 10 kills and 13 digs. Classmate
Haley Witschey added six kills, while sophomore
Katie Howard chalked up a dozen digs. First-years
Paige Milhon and
Jac Cousineau stepped up with five blocks and 12 assists, respectively.
Against Defiance (11-5), the Ladies got things going with 15 kills in a first-set win. Bruzzio accounted for six of those and junior
Lauren Limbach had five. The Ladies jumped out to an 8-4 lead and never looked back. A 4-0 run pushed the Kenyon advantage to 13-4 and, later, a 5-0 run featuring a pair of kills from Bruzzio, put the Kenyon women ahead 21-11.
The Ladies (2-9) hit at a .302 rate in that opening set, but couldn't keep that pace for the rest of the match. That left the door open for the Yellow Jackets to take the next three.
Limbach piled up 15 kills against Defiance and tacked on six digs and a couple of blocks. Bruzzio added 13 kills and 18 more digs, giving her 23 and 31 on the day. Howard chalked up 22 more digs and Milhon blocked another eight attempted kills. Cousineau served up 16 more assists, giving her a team-best 28 throughout the day.
The Ladies have some time to recuperate this week and will start their North Coast Athletic Conference schedule Friday with a home match against Oberlin College.
