WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster Fighting Scots had the Kenyon College Ladies' number last season, winning a trio of one-goal field hockey games, including an overtime win in the semifinal round of the 2018 North Coast Athletic Conference tournament.
Thursday, under the lights at John P. Papp Stadium, the Ladies got a measure of revenge by chalking up a 2-1 victory over the Fighting Scots in non-conference action.
While the two goals were nice, Kenyon's defense was once again the story of the game. The Ladies yielded just three shots to Wooster. Two of those shots were off target and the other resulted in a third-quarter goal, the first goal the Ladies allowed in more than 258 minutes of play.
Back in first-quarter play, the Kenyon offense manufactured the game's first goal. A little more than seven minutes from the start, sophomore
Emma Hyer uncorked a shot that Wooster goalkeeper Katie Shideler saved. Shideler, however, let the ball rebound off her and out to sophomore
Sarah Metzmaier, who fired it over the goal line.
Wooster's game-tying goal came with 3:03 left in the third quarter. The Fighting Scots scored off a penalty corner, with Maggie Brown ripping a shot that was deflected into the Kenyon cage by Harriet Sudduth.
With things knotted 1-1 going into the final quarter of play, it didn't take long for the Ladies to regain control. A little more than three minutes into the quarter, junior
Olivia O'Connell broke loose down the right side and fed Metzmaier, who again finished the play, recorded the game-winner and upped her season goal total to six, a team-best. The assist was O'Connell's team-best third of the season.
Kenyon, now 6-2 and winner of five straight, out-shot Wooster 19-3. The Ladies and Fighting Scots, now 3-4, will meet again on November 2 in the last regular-season game of the season. That game, which will be played in Gambier, will count as a conference contest.
