Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Newcomers push Lords to comeback win

GAMBIER, Ohio – With Colorado College holding a 1-0 lead with less than 30 minutes left, the Kenyon College men's soccer team got a big boost from its freshman class and rallied to win, 2-1, on Friday evening at Mavec Field.

Before some second-half heroics, the Lords (2-1) started very quickly against the Tigers, a team from Colorado Springs and members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Not even 90 seconds in, Scott Upton just missed connecting on a cross as his attempt went above the crossbar. Philippe Stengel added another good attempt less than a minute later but it went wide.

After that, though, Kenyon did not generate much. There were just two more shots on target: a header from Aidan Schoellkopf at 14:16 and a kick from Drew Parker at 40:08. Tigers' senior Keller Mochel saved both.

For the visitors, a shot from Griffin Meyer at 25:59 nearly broke the scoreless tie. His attempt around the 18-yard box deflected off a Kenyon defender and was heading towards the goalmouth. However, a teammate made contact with the ball and was whistled offside.

In the second half, a Lords gamble helped the Tigers (2-1) take a 1-0 lead.

A missed slide tackle allowed Sam Bermingham to drive into the box where he passed to Jackson Silverstein. The Tigers' forward then fired into the left corner for the match's first goal at 53:51.

Less than eight minutes later, after a couple substitutions from the Kenyon coaching staff, the home squad knotting things up. A corner kick from freshman Sebastian Brylka was one-timed back into the net by another newcomer, Atli Hrafnkelsson, his third goal of the year.

Then at the 73:45 mark, Kenyon took the lead. Mac Nardiello-Smith dribbled around multiple defenders and fed a pass to Sam Carson for the go-ahead goal.

In the last 16 minutes, Kenyon's defense tightened up and it allowed just two shots to the Tigers.

Tomorrow, the Lords will play another tough opponent in Wheaton College starting at 5 p.m.
