Lords stun Wheaton in double overtime

GAMBIER, Ohio – Wheaton College had a 2-1 lead with 90 seconds left before Kenyon College (3-1) rallied to force overtime where it later won 3-2 on a Mac Nardiello-Smith goal in the second extra session.

First-half action was slow for both squads before Lords freshman forward Trevor Gleason scored in the waning minutes before intermission.

There were just three shots on goal in the opening half. Two were saved by junior Ian McInturf and the other came to Gleason who stole a pass on the back end before scoring his first collegiate goal.

In the second half, though, Kenyon struggled outside of two Nardiello-Smith shots in the 77th and 79th minutes. Leading up to those attempts, Wheaton seized the lead.

After a Kenyon foul just outside the goalie's box, Michael Martens delivered a highlight-reel goal to the left post in the 56th minute to tie the match. About 17 minutes later, the Thunder took the lead. A corner from Alessandro D'Argento trickled near the top of the 18 and Will Woodfin fired from center-line and pushed the visitors ahead.

Over the next 15 minutes, the Lords had some looks – including the two from Nardiello-Smith – but none came through. Things changed at 88:31.  A deflected ball came to sophomore Scott Upton who drove left-side and scored his second goal of the season.

After the first overtime session, with each team attempting a couple shots, competition went into the second 10-minute period.

In the 105th minute, a Wheaton foul setup a set piece for Kenyon and Upton crossed a pass to Nardiello-Smith who headed home his second goal of 2019.

Next on the schedule for the Lords is a neutral site match against Spalding University on September 13 on the campus of Centre College.
