Ladies upend No. 17-ranked Presidents

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Junior Tara Shetty played a role in putting two goals on the scoreboard Sunday and helped lift the Kenyon College Ladies field hockey team to a 2-1 road win over the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents, a team ranked No. 17 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association preseason poll.

Washington and Jefferson posted an 18-2 record during the 2018 season and one of those wins was a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Kenyon. Sunday's result, however, evened both the Generals' and the Ladies' record at 2-2 to start the 2019 campaign.

Both teams managed just one shot in the first quarter of play. The Generals took their shot, which sailed wide of its target, six minutes into the game. Kenyon took its shot with just three seconds remaining in the period. A long pass from freshman Carolyn Herbosa found Shetty, who beat Washington and Jefferson goalkeeper Rena Israel. It was Shetty's first goal of the season and Herbosa's team-leading second assist.

The Generals only had one shot in the second quarter of play, too, but this time they made it count. Alexis Miller tallied her first goal of the season, beating Kenyon keeper Suzy Deems, using an assist from Josephine Robson.

Four minutes later, Shetty got the Ladies on the board again, putting Kenyon ahead for good. She sent a through pass to sophomore Sarah Metzmaier, who finished the play with her first goal of the season.

Both teams were shutout in the second half and ended up with a total of eight shots for the game. Six of Kenyon's shots came in the first half, while six of the Generals' were taken in second-half play. Freshman Payton Doan took over in goal for the Ladies at the halfway point and made five saves to secure the win for Kenyon.

The Ladies get to play their next three games at home, starting with Saturday's non-conference contest against Oberlin College.
