GAMBIER, Ohio –
Carter Powell posted 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds as the Kenyon College men's basketball team earned a gritty 72-61 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Hiram College on Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena
The win snapped Kenyon's six-game skid and improved the team's record to 6-10 and 3-6 in NCAC play. For Hiram, it fell to 5-11 and 2-7.
Ugnius Zilinskas also aided the Lords with 17 points while newcomer
Nick Lewis came off the bench to tally a season-high 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. As a team, Kenyon had nine players score a bucket, and it hit seven more three-pointers than the Terriers did (10-3). Additionally, the Lords were 12-of-15 at the foul line.
First-half action was extremely close with Kenyon leading for more than 13 minutes in the stanza. Early on, the score was tied at 6-6 after Antonio McQueen's layup at the 14:08 mark. The Lords found some rhythm after that.
Kenyon scored points on six of its next eight possessions, which included a quartet of three-balls. The last of those came at 10:20 when Lewis buried a long ball from teammate
Christian Watanabe. At that point, Kenyon led 21-16.
Hiram responded with a quick 5-0 spurt to tie the affair on a Brodgie Gordon free throw. However, the Lords didn't succumb to the visitor's push and retook the lead as Zilinskas converted an and-one two possessions later giving Kenyon a 24-21 lead. Over the remainder of the half, Kenyon stayed in front and took a 32-28 advantage into the locker room.
A little over five minutes into the second half, Kenyon went up double digits. Once again, Watanabe found Lewis for a three-pointer and at 14:51 the Lords led 45-34. Over the next 11 minutes, Kenyon stayed in front comfortably until Hiram made its last push.
Trailing 61-50, the Terriers scored eight straight, all by McQueen, and brought the scoreboard to 61-58. It was the last gasp, though, for the visitors who tallied just three points over the final 3:08. In that time, Zilinskas tallied a half-dozen to lead Kenyon while Powell and Watanabe also found the bottom of the net.
Next on the schedule for the Lords is a home date against DePauw University on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Lords defeated DePauw 69-65 back on December 1 in Indiana.
