SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The frontcourt trio of Kristie Kalis, Riley Culver and Korynne Berner controlled Saturday's basketball game and steered the Wittenberg University Tigers to a 65-46 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Kenyon College Ladies.
Those three combined for 41 points and 23 rebounds, while shooting 47.2 percent (17-of-36). Kalis led all scorers with 16 points. She also had eight rebounds. Berner logged a game-high 10 rebounds to go with 12 points, while Culver contributed 13 points and five more boards. They boosted the Tigers to a 24-10 advantage in points in the paint, as well as a 38-27 rebounding margin.
Despite those numbers, Kenyon ran in stride with the Tigers for the first half of play. Senior
Paige Matijasich scored eight points in those first 20 minutes and the Ladies trailed by just two (25-23) at the half. The Ladies might have had the lead at the break, if not for some struggles behind the three-point line, where they fired at a 20.0 percent clip (3-of-15).
When Wittenberg's Delaney Williams connected on a three-pointer to open the second half of play, things went south for Kenyon. Including those three points, the Tigers went on a 12-0 run over a five minute span and built a 37-23 lead.
Later in the third, a
Madelyn Anderson three-pointer cut the Kenyon deficit down to nine, but the Tigers outscored the Ladies 22-8 in the frame to take a 16-point lead into the final quarter of play.
Anderson ended up posting a team-high 13 points for Kenyon. Eight of those 13 came in the second half, when Kenyon improved its three-point shooting to 44.4 percent (4-of-9). Anderson was 3-of-7 from long range, for the game.
Matijasich was held to three second-half points and finished the game with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Greta Propp added seven points to the Kenyon total and
Katie Orefice scored six.
Bridget Molnar tacked on six rebounds and a block, her team-best 32nd block of the season.
Anderson's final three-pointer of the game snapped the net at the 7:36 mark of the fourth quarter and pulled the Ladies within 10 points. The Tigers, however, closed out the contest on a 16-7 run with Kalis, Culver and Berner responsible for 12 of those final Wittenberg points.
The win improved the Tigers' records to 14-6 overall and 7-4 in the NCAC. The Ladies fell to 7-13 overall and 4-8 in the NCAC, but can look forward to a three-game home stand that begins Wednesday against The College of Wooster.
