Hiram outlasts Lords in double OT

HIRAM, Ohio – Hiram College won a barnburner on Wednesday night, defeating Kenyon College 95-92 in double overtime during a North Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Price Gymnasium.

There were 15 lead changes and 11 ties during the contest that saw the Terriers improve to 7-15 and 4-11 in conference play. As for Kenyon, it fell for the sixth straight game and moved its record to 6-16 and 3-12.

Ugnius Zilinskas tallied a team-high 25 points and added eight rebounds while senior Carter Powell added 16 points and eight boards. The Lords got a boost off the bench from Elijah Davis and Nick Lewis who tallied 14 and 10 points, respectively. As a whole, Kenyon shot efficiently; hitting 44 percent but it did leave nine missed free throws on the stat sheet (18-of-27).

Within the first 2:35, the Lords hit all four of their shots and led 11-3 after a Powell three-ball. Hiram responded with 10 straight to take its first advantage, 13-11, after a layup from Sherman Dean III at 15:00. That started the back and forth by the two teams.

Hiram stayed in front over the next 11:41 before the Lords recaptured the lead. Down 32-24, Kenyon reeled off a 9-0 stretch and went in front 33-32 following freshman Nate Duggins' three-pointer at 3:19. The lead changed hands a couple more times after that and at halftime, Hiram was up 42-40. In the first half, both teams shot at least 48 percent.

After the break, the Terries maintained their advantage and went up as many as 12 points. After about seven minutes of action, Antonio McQueen's jumper in the paint moved the home squad up 64-52.

Once more, the Lords chipped away and later went in front. That came with 4:53 left as Davis scored to bring the count to 70-69. Over the next 2:55, the scoreboard advantage changed hands a couple of times before the tally was 77-77 following a Zilinskas free throw. In the final 1:27, Kenyon missed four free throws and two shots and sent the game to overtime.

In the first extra session, the Terriers led by three, 85-82, but a Davis jumper and free throw from Lewis tied things up. Then in the second overtime, Lewis once more tied the game 92-all with another bomb with 46 seconds left. However, on the ensuing possession, Hiram's Dean converted an and-one off the right block.

On Kenyon's final possession down 95-92, it was unable to get a shot off.
