WASHINGTON, Pa. –
Will Robbins tallied a trio of goals as the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team had no trouble in its 11-2 season-opening win at Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday.
The Lords dominated the stat sheet in numerous categories: 59-21 in shots; 51-30 in ground balls; and had a 13-to-4 face off advantage. Kenyon also forced 14 caused turnovers against the Presidents.
First-half action was slow for the Lords as they only tallied two goals.
Mike Matteo tallied the team's first goal of the season with 2:42 left in the first and he followed with another one 8:56 mark of the second. Presidents' goalie Noah Cohen kept his team in the game as he stopped 14 Lords shot over the first two stanzas.
After halftime, though, W&J was not able to fend off the Lords' attack. Robbins scored twice within the first four minutes of the third to double the Kenyon lead.
Sam Humphrey then got into the mix and pushed the Kenyon lead to 5-0 before Robbins scored again on an assist from
Vi Lobo.
The Presidents were able to get a pair of goals from Alex Strain and Brendan Tribeck to cut the deficit to 6-2 with 2:33 left. However, Kenyon stopped that small spurt and watched as junior
Joe Bolea's first goal with one minute remaining pushed the scoreboard tally to 7-2.
In the final quarter, it was all Lords as they out-shot the hosts 10-2 in on-target attempts.
Weston Powell scored twice for Kenyon while newcomer
Rex Thors and
Will Harrigan tallied Kenyon's final two of the game, respectively.
Defensively in the period, the Lords allowed just a pair of Presidents shot to reach
David Metzger. Both were saved by the junior goalie.
Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a home date with Capital University on February 22 at 1 p.m.
