GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords finished Saturday's home opener strong, outscoring the visiting Capital University Crusaders 5-2 in the fourth quarter to pull away for an 11-6 non-conference win during the first-ever men's lacrosse game played on the Field at Benson Bowl.
Kenyon fell behind early, but got to halftime with a 6-3 lead. For most of the third quarter, the score remained that way. Capital's Adam Rieger then scored back-to-back goals. He struck first with 58 seconds left in the third quarter and then again 44 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Now clinging to a one-goal lead, the Lords quickly responded. Thirteen seconds after Rieger scored his second goal, Kenyon freshman
Mike Bazzano flipped momentum back to the Lords' side with his first collegiate goal.
Less than a minute after Bazzano's goal, Kenyon scored again, this time the successful shot came off the stick of senior
Sam Humphrey, who pushed the Lords' lead back out to three goals with 13:08 left in the game.
Capital got one of those goals back when Jack Scharner scored at the 11:58 mark, but that would be it for the Crusaders, who fell to 1-2.
Kenyon junior
Matt Pollack put the game out of reach with back-to-back goals and classmate
Will Harrigan padded the lead with one more tally in the final minute.
Pollack finished the game with five points on four goals and an assist.
Will Robbins scored twice and assisted on two other goals.
Jack Giuffre scored twice and
Vi Lobo chalked up a pair of assists for the Lords, who improved to 2-0.
Despite the modest final score, Kenyon did whip up 60 shots throughout the game, compared to 30 for Capital. The Crusaders goalkeeper, Sam McInturf, ended up making 21 saves to keep his team alive. At the other end of the field, Kenyon goalkeeper
David Metzger made 10 saves.
The Lords fell behind, 2-0, early in the game, but they used extra-man opportunities to pull even and then take the lead. In all, the Lords were 3-for-6 with the extra man and that included a pair of man-up goals in the first quarter. Capital also had six extra-man chances, but failed to score on any of them.
