Lords hang on to split with Scots

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – After letting game one get away from them Thursday evening, the Kenyon College Lords built an early lead in game two and held on to salvage a doubleheader split with the Monmouth College Scots. Kenyon took game two by a 4-3 final. Prior to that, Monmouth blew open what was a close game to record a 9-0 win.

In the game-two victory, the Lords jumped out to a quick start, scoring twice in the first inning. Alex Gow and Patrick O'Leary both singled to get things going. Another single from J.J. Conway plated Gow and, two batters later, Brent Henderson lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to score O'Leary.

On the mound, Kenyon freshman Ayden Head was holding his own. The Scots scored a run in the first, but that was due to a Kenyon error. Head ended up throwing five innings and picking up the win. He allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three.

The Lords gave Head a little more breathing room in the top of the third inning. After Andrew Rabinowitz led off with a double, O'Leary cranked a two-run shot over the left field wall, giving Kenyon a 4-1 lead.

The Scots inched closer with single runs in the third and fourth innings. They also loaded the bases in the fifth, but Head got out of that mess before he exited the game.

In the sixth, Nathan Chandler took over mound duties for Kenyon. He whipped through the inning with two strikeouts and a groundout. When he returned for the seventh inning, he got a great defensive play from third baseman Paul Siciliano and then recorded two more strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.

In game one, Kenyon starter Patrick Craig got off to a fantastic start, striking out six of the first eight batters he faced. In the top of the fourth inning, however, things started to fall apart. He gave up two runs to the Scots after allowing three walks and two singles.

With the help of another walk and a hit batter, Monmouth loaded the bases in the fifth inning. This time, Craig managed to wiggle out of the jam with his ninth strikeout, followed by a ground ball.

The Lords offense threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gow led off with a single against Conner Sharp, Monmouth's starting pitcher. Rabinowitz then got aboard via an error and both runners later moved up on a wild pitch. Sharp then coaxed two fly balls and a strike out to strand the Kenyon runners.

The Scots put things out of reach with a seven-run seventh inning. Sharp came back to the mound in the bottom of the frame and finished off a complete game four-hitter. He struck out seven and walked one to earn the win.

Craig fell to 1-2 with the loss. In his five innings of work, he struck out nine. He allowed just four hits, but issued five walks.

Gow, Rabinowitz, O'Leary and Jake Brown accounted for the Lords' game-one hit total.

Kenyon, now 6-8, wraps up its spring break schedule with a 1:30 p.m. game Friday against Penn State Behrend.
