Brown’s big hit evens things up with Blue Jays

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Kenyon College junior Jake Brown ripped a three-run, pinch-hit double that gave the Lords baseball team a 5-3 game-two victory and a doubleheader split with the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays.

That scene took place Monday, the Lords' second day of their two-week spring-break schedule at the Lawnwood Sports Complex. The split moved Kenyon's overall record to 1-2 and put Head Coach Matt Burdette one win away from reaching the 400th of his career.

After losing game one, 6-5, the Kenyon club trailed 3-1 in the sixth inning of game two. In the bottom of the inning, Alex Gow started Kenyon's game-winning rally with a single to right field. Kyle Dwyer draw a walk and was replaced on the base paths by Will Sturgeon. Patrick O'Leary then singled up the middle, scoring Gow. Alexander Hoskins followed with a single to right center, loading up the bases. Brown then stepped into the box as a pinch hitter and delivered a double that cleared the bases.

Things got a little dicey in the top of the seventh inning, but reliever Will Allen worked out of a base-loaded jam to preserve the win and earn his first save of the season.

Both teams managed just five hits in game two and four of Kenyon's came in the sixth inning. The other hit came from Andrew Rabinowitz, who singled home O'Leary in the second inning.

On the mound, Ayden Head got the start for the Lords. He lasted four innings. In that time, he gave up three earned runs on three hits and a pair walks. He also struck out five Blue Jays. Zach Frizzera and Joel Biery each worked a scoreless inning of relief, bridging the gap to Allen.

In game one, Kenyon trailed throughout the first four innings, but tied things up at 4-4 with a two-run fifth inning. Two singles and a sacrifice bunt set up the inning. Run-scoring singles from Sturgeon and Rabinowitz finished off the frame.

Elizabethtown (4-2) came right back with a two-run sixth inning to take the lead for good. The big hit came from Andrew Fisher, who stroked a two-run double off Kenyon reliever Nathan Chandler.

Kenyon posted single-run innings in the second, fourth and seventh. The Lords' first run was unearned. The second run came from an Eric DelRosso sacrifice fly that scored Rabinowitz. In the seventh, as the Lords tried to rally, Paul Siciliano knocked home the team's lone run with a double that plated Sturgeon.

Kenyon had 13 hits in game one, but left a dozen men stranded.

Gow was the game-one starter and he fanned nine in five innings before giving way to Chandler. Gow yielded four of the Blue Jays' six runs on seven hits and two walks.

At the plate, O'Leary ended up going a combined 4-for-7 over the two games. He had one RBI and scored four times. Hoskins and Rabinowitz both had three hits on the day, while Siciliano and Gow had two apiece.

Tuesday brings a day off for the Lords. They will be back in business Wednesday with a doubleheader against the Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen.
