FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen piled up 23 hits and scored 20 runs in a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader sweep of the Kenyon College baseball team. The Lords managed 20 hits on the day, but fell in game one, 9-5, and then dropped game two, 11-3.
Alexander Hoskins and
Eric DelRosso each accounted for four hits in the doubleheader. Hoskins hit in the No. 5 hole in the Lords' lineup and was a combined 4-for-7 with a double and one run scored. DelRosso hit in the No. 7 spot and was 4-for-8 with a pair of RBI.
Andrew Rabinowitz added a 3-for-6 showing that included two RBI and three runs scored.
In game one, Hoskins posted his double in the fourth inning and came around to score the Lords' first run of the day on a Lebanon Valley error. At that point, it was a 4-1 ball game. In the bottom of the inning, however, the Dutchmen blew things open with four runs on three hits, a Kenyon error and a hit batsman.
Kenyon got two runs back in the fifth inning on RBI singles from Rabinowitz and DelRosso. Then, in the seventh inning, the same two Lords plated the last two runs of the game, making the final margin four.
Lebanon Valley (7-2) roughed up Kenyon starting pitcher
Zach Elsawy for eight runs on eight hits and a walk. Just five of those runs were earned and Elsawy logged four strikeouts in four innings of work. Freshman
Sam Richards closed out the final two innings for Kenyon, giving up just one unearned run on one hit.
In game two, Lebanon Valley senior Michael Leri put on a show. He smashed three home runs, including a three-run shot in the first inning. He finished the game 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and six RBI.
Kenyon used five different pitchers, including starter
Charlie Bailey, but only
Joel Biery, who pitched the fifth inning, came away unscathed. Bailey lasted just two innings and took the loss.
At the plate, Kenyon scored once in the first inning and twice in the seventh. In the first, Rabinowitz got on base after being hit by a pitch. He later scored on a double struck by
Alex Gow. In the seventh,
Ryan Page doubled and scored when Rabinowitz reached base via a Lebanon Valley error. One batter later,
Patrick O'Leary doubled to plate Rabinowitz.
Next up for Kenyon (1-4) is a single game on Thursday. That will be a nine-inning contest against Wilkes University beginning at noon.
