FORT PIERCE, Fla. –
Alexander Hoskins had a three-hit, four-RBI game and
Alex Gow struck out 14 batters, but the Kenyon College baseball team couldn't catch up to the Stars of Dominican University, who held on for a 7-6 win Sunday morning.
Dominican (3-3) got to Gow early, scoring three runs off the Kenyon starter. The Stars used two doubles, a single and a hit batter to build a quick 3-0 lead.
Kenyon (3-6) got one run back in the second and then tied the game up with a two-run fifth inning. In the second,
Kyle Dwyer singled and later came around to score on another single from
Paul Siciliano. In the fifth, with two outs, the Lords capitalized on a Dominican error to score two unearned runs. Gow got on base because of the error. Pinch-hitter
Jack Anderson then singled and Hoskins tripled to left field to bring both runners home.
On the mound, Gow was in a groove until the bottom of the fifth. Prior to that, he struck out eight consecutive batters, including four in the fourth inning. After that run, Gow yielded a single and then a two-run homer before being pulled in the bottom of the fifth.
Now trailing 5-3, Kenyon moved within one run in the sixth inning after
Will Sturgeon singled and later came around to score on a fielder's choice put in play by
Ryan Page.
Kenyon reliever
Grayson Lawrence gave up a run to the Stars in the sixth before
Will Allen came on to close out the final three innings. The lone blemish on Allen's pitching line was a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. At that point, Kenyon trailed 7-4.
In the top of the ninth, the Lords scored two more, but couldn't generate the tying run.
Andrew Rabinowitz and
Joaquin Murrieta set the stage with singles. Hoskins then singled to left to score both runners. The next two Kenyon batters struck out to end the game.
Hoskins finished 3-for-5 with four RBI at the plate. He's played in all nine game to start the season and leads the Lords with a .515 batting average (17-for-33). Rabinowitz and Sturgeon both finished with two hits Sunday. For the season, Rabinowitz isn't far off Hoskins' pace. He's hitting .452 (14-for-31) in nine games played.
The Lords get right back at it tomorrow, with a doubleheader against Marymount University beginning at 1:30 p.m.
