Late-inning rally helps Ladies split doubleheader

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Kenyon College (11-1) was dealt its first loss of the season in a tightly-contest 1-0 decision against Wilmington College before fighting back to defeat the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 7-6 on Sunday at the Gene Cusic Classic.

GAME ONE

Wilmington pitcher Grace Shell gave the Ladies' offense fits throughout the afternoon.

She struck out six, induced 14 flyouts and groundouts and allowed just three hits to the Ladies. Plus, Shell allowed just one Lady, senior Lauren Graf, to reach scoring position. That happened in the second and fifth innings.

For Kenyon, it was the first time this season that it was held scoreless.

In the other dugout, Emily Pater did a stellar job, too. She took the tough-luck loss by tossing seven frames, striking out a pair while getting Wilmington into 13 flyouts.

The game's only scoring came in the fourth. Back-to-back singles from Wilmington's Hayley Suchland and Brooke Durbin started the frame. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly to center field from Alecia Kemp plated Suchland.

The Ladies had a chance to tie in the fifth. After Grace Finn walked, two Ladies occupied the base paths. However, Shell got a strikeout, her sixth of the day, to end the threat. Shell then retired Kenyon in order in the sixth and seventh frames.

GAME TWO

A massive comeback in the bottom of the sixth helped the Ladies defeat the Coast Guard Academy 7-6 late in the afternoon.

Until that point, Bears' centerfielder Kayla Yoshioka Monta had a pair of RBI singles while Katie Becker and Audrey Bartz added a couple more.

Trailing 6-1 heading into the home half of the sixth, the Ladies found magic.

Finn drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to bring in Emily Pater. It was the third time Finn was hit by a pitch in the game, which was one off the record. Kenyon cut the deficit in half in the next at-bat as Sara Campagna drove in Kassie Rimel with a single.

Now down 6-3, Emily Buckwalter connected with a sacrifice fly to center field plating Clare McMahon. The Ladies' last three runs came as Nicole Bishay drove in Finn and Lauren Graf's infield single resulted in a throwing error which allowed Campagna and Bishay to score.

Pater then closed the game in the seventh retiring the USCGA side. For Pater (5-1), she tossed the final 3.1 innings, allowed two runs and induced 10 groundouts and flyouts.

The Ladies have tomorrow off but will return to action on March 10 against Rochester Institute of Technology and SUNY Oneonta.
