Ladies start strong, but Terriers rally

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team got off to a good start Saturday, winning its first set against Hiram College at Tomsich Arena. The visiting Terriers, however, responded by winning the next three sets to claim a 25-27, 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 North Coast Athletic Conference win.

The Ladies came out swimming in set one, racking up 17 kills and a .308 hitting percentage. No matter what they did, though, they couldn't shake the Terriers, who took late leads of 23-22 and 25-24.

A kill from senior Elyse Davidson knotted the set at 25-25. Lauren Limbach, also a senior, threw down another kill to put the Ladies ahead 26-25. Macy Reimbold, a junior, then tacked on an ace to seal the Ladies' set victory.

Davidson and Reimbold went on to each post a team-high 11 kills throughout the match. Davidson added five blocks, while Reimbold piled up nine digs, three blocks, and three aces. Junior Ellie Luciani racked up a team-high 19 digs and classmate Jac Cousineau had 13 digs to go along with 19 assists.

The first-set loss served as a wake-up call for the Terriers, who turned things around with an 11-2 run in the second set. Trailing Kenyon 10-8, Hiram rang up five straight points. Kenyon responded with two, but the Terriers whipped up six more to move ahead 19-12.

In the final two sets, Hiram jumped out to quick starts and rode them to victory. In the third set, the Terriers built early leads of 10-4 and 16-7. In the fourth set they moved ahead 7-2 and 15-7 before putting the match away.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 2-14 overall and 0-5 in the NCAC. The win evened out Hiram's overall record to 11-11, while its conference mark moved to 2-3.

The Ladies have three matches left in the regular season. The first of those three will be Tuesday evening at home against The College of Wooster. After that, it's a road trip to Wittenberg University and then back home for the finale against Ohio Wesleyan University.
