Lords steal game on the road against Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's soccer team defeated the Oberlin College Yeomen 3-2 Wednesday night.

The Lords came out true to form and created pressure on the Oberlin back line. In the first 10 minutes of play, Kenyon created four shots. In the 12th minute, Aidan Burns sent a ball to the back side of the 18-yard box off a corner kick. After bouncing around, Johann Johannsson gained possession at the edge of the box before being taken down and drawing a foul on an Oberlin defender. On the following penalty kick, Scott Upton stepped up and buried the ball into the back of the net to give Kenyon a 1-0 lead. The Lords continued to find opportunities to score but could not convert their shots into goals. After the first half of play, the Lords outshot the Yeomen 16-0 with three of those on goal.

Looking to add on another goal early in the second half, Gerardo Martinez sent a shot toward goal from 25-yards out. Oberlin goalkeeper Colvin Iorio made a diving save to keep the game within one. It wouldn't take long for Kenyon to add on to their lead as Gerardo Martinez took possession past midfield. After gaining open space, Martinez passed to a wide open Sebastian Gaese. Gaese made his way into the box as Iorio came off of his goal line, but Gaese shot under the arm of the Yeomen keeper. In the 54th minute, Oberlin intercepted a Kenyon pass. The Yeomen pushed forward and found Nic Jandeleit who put it over the head of Jack Pedreschi to cut the Lords' lead in half. Kenyon restored their two goal advantage in the 61st minute. Sam Carson stole the ball from the Oberlin defenders and made his way toward goal. Carson beat two defenders in the box and sent a shot back post to beat Iorio for his fourth goal of the year. After a Kenyon foul, Ben Kessler sent the free kick into the box. Oberlin's Toby Wells-Zimmerman put his header into the back of the net to reduce the lead once again. In the final three minutes of the game, Alem Duratovic looked to put the game away, but Iorio pushed his attempt away.

The Lords look to secure the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title on Saturday as they go on the road to take on DePauw University.
