Lords top DePauw, earn sixth straight title

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Using a late goal by Sebastian Gaese, the Kenyon College Lords soccer team won its 14th straight game, topping the DePauw University Tigers, 1-0, on Saturday. The victory finalized the Lords' conference record at 9-0-0 and yielded a sixth straight North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular season title.

Kenyon, ranked at No. 12 and at No. 17 in two different national polls, earned the right to host the NCAC Tournament semifinal round, which will take place Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Lords will host the Wabash College Little Giants for the right to move on to Saturday's NCAC final. Ohio Wesleyan University and Denison University will square off in the other NCAC semifinal contest.

Closing out the regular season, the Lords put pressure on DePauw immediately, taking two shots within the first two minutes of the game. That dominance carried through the rest of the half, with Kenyon taking eight shots compared to two for DePauw. Despite being the aggressors, the Lords failed to capitalize, finishing the half knotted in a scoreless tie.

The second half felt a lot like the first, with the Lords having opportunities, but not quite converting them. The first 15 minutes featured a Kenyon five-shot barrage, but none of them found their intended target. The opportunities kept on coming, but it wasn't until the 82nd minute when the Lords earned a corner kick that culminated in a goal for Gaese, his ninth of the season. The goal, assisted by Aidan Burns, proved to be the decisive tally, giving the Lords a hard fought 1-0 victory.

The Kenyon defense was key in the win, with the back line led by Sam Hosmer-Quint and Burns doing their part to preserve the clean sheet. Goalkeeper Jack Pedreschi made two saves, with the impressive defense limiting the Tigers' shot opportunities throughout the contest.

The Lords, who own a dozen NCAC titles throughout program history, enter postseason play with a 14-1-1 overall record.
