Hornets escape Ladies in overtime

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College field hockey team fell in overtime to No. 19 University of Lynchburg 2-1 at home Sunday.

The Hornets came out strong in the first quarter of play. Lynchburg totaled eight shots in the first quarter against Kenyon goalkeeper Payton Doan. Doan locked down the Hornet attack by making seven saves in the beginning of the match. The Ladies held their ground as the game went to the second quarter tied 0-0.

Lynchburg continued to get shots on goal in the early part of the second quarter as Payton Doan continued to make saves. It wasn't until the 21st minute that the Hornets would break through and get a ball into the cage. After taking the ball down the in-line, Emily Yanes passed the ball across the front of the goal to find Franka Weronka on the back post for the Lynchburg goal. Lynchburg retained their 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the half.

In the third quarter, Kenyon started playing toward the goal more. After a couple Lynchburg shots and a penalty corner, the Ladies responded by finding their own shots and penalty corners. Lynchburg goalkeeper Kayla Brady stopped each shot and shut down any opportunity Kenyon had. After three periods of play, it was Lynchburg clinging to a 1-0 lead.

Lynchburg started the fourth aggressively, gaining five shots and two corners early. The Ladies defense blocked three of those shots and Doan made a save on another. Just a few minutes later, Doan came up huge with two more stops to keep the game within one. In the 55th minute, the Ladies cracked the Hornet defense after a flurry of shots. Kayla Brady made the first two saves, but Hannah Paprotna found the rebound and tied the game with minutes to go. In the closing 90 seconds, Lynchburg looked to win the game but another Payton Doan save sent the game to overtime.

The Hornets continued to pressure the Ladies' defense in the extra time. After only 1:46 into the overtime period, Lynchburg's Emily Dudley found the back of the cage off a Jackie Lerro pass, ending the contest.

The Ladies return to conference action on Saturday as they host Denison University at 11 a.m.
