Ladies drop conference contest to Big Red

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a Saturday morning rivalry game that very well could have postseason implications in a few weeks, the visiting Denison University Big Red tallied a pair of second-half goals to register a 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory over the Kenyon College field hockey team.

The win kept Denison just one of two teams left in the NCAC with an unbeaten conference record. Following the result, the Big Red improved to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC. The loss dropped the host Ladies 7-4 overall and 1-1 in conference competition.

The game's first goal came ten minutes from the start and was scored by Denison's Maya Tumiwa. She worked the left side of the field, got down to the end line and cut toward the Kenyon cage. From a sharp angle, she lifted her shot over Kenyon goalkeeper Payton Doan and into the upper right corner of the goal.

Late in the second quarter, Kenyon senior Sarah Metzmaier scored the equalizer. From the right side, Metzmaier found an opening and unleashed a rocket that rang off the left post and into the Denison cage. The goal was Metzmaier's team-leading eighth of the season.

The 1-1 deadlock remained until Denison scored again, off a penalty corner roughly seven minutes into the third quarter. After the insert, Tumiwa took a shot that sailed high. Her teammate, Ana Ortiz-DeRosa, reached up to knock it down. The ball then bounced around a bit in front of the Kenyon goal before coming right back to Ortiz-DeRosa, who tapped it over the goal line.

Early in the fourth quarter, Kenyon had a golden opportunity to tie things up again. Carolyn Herbosa made a long pass that freed Orcin Akman for a breakaway. Akman got a shot off, but it was stopped by Denison goalkeeper Maren Kraak.

Midway through the final quarter, Denison tacked on one more goal to seal the win. This time, Ortiz-DeRosa drove the right side and then passed the ball out to Grace Lock, who buried her shot into the left side of the Kenyon goal.

Aside from the final score, statistics were even across the board. Both teams managed a dozen shots and both earned seven penalty corners. Doan and Megan Lydon combined to make four saves for Kenyon, while Kraak made five for Denison.

Kenyon gets right back to work tomorrow, traveling to Wittenberg University for a 1 p.m. conference contest against the Tigers (7-5, 1-1 NCAC).
