Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Ladies defeat Scots, land share of NCAC title

WOOSTER, Ohio -- With Saturday's 2-0 field hockey win at The College of Wooster, the Kenyon College Ladies clinched at least a share of the 2021 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular season title.

The Ladies end their regular season schedule with a 13-4 overall record and a 7-1 mark in conference play. The Earlham College Quakers are 15-2 overall and 6-1 in NCAC play. They have their final game tomorrow at Ohio Wesleyan University. If the Quakers win, they become co-NCAC champions with the Ladies, who now have six NCAC crowns in program history.

Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's game between Earlham and Ohio Wesleyan, Kenyon's Saturday win clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAC Tournament. The Ladies defeated Earlham during the regular season, so, if a tie-breaker is needed at the top of the standings, it will go Kenyon's way.

Kenyon's opponent in the NCAC Tournament semifinal round, which will be Tuesday on The Field at Benson Bowl, will be either Ohio Wesleyan, if they defeat Earlham, or Wittenberg, if Ohio Wesleyan loses. Earlham has already locked up the tournament's No. 2 seed and will host No. 3 seed Denison University in the NCAC's other semifinal game.

Against Wooster, the Ladies took a while to warm up. They fired off four shots in the first quarter and no shots in the second quarter. Wooster had just one shot in each quarter and the teams went scoreless into the intermission.

Following the break, the Ladies snapped out of their funk and unloaded seven shots on the Fighting Scots' cage. One of those shots came from Bella Kern, who recorded her 12th goal of the season. An initial shot from Sarah Metzmaier was saved by Wooster goalkeeper Zoe Semersky, but the rebound came to Kern, who corralled it and fired it over the goal line.

About five minutes into the fourth quarter, the Ladies tacked on an insurance goal from Lydia Turk, who found herself open in the middle of the circle and took the shot from about nine yards out. The goal was both Turk's first of the season and first of her collegiate career.
