GAMBIER -- The Kenyon College men's basketball team fell in their season opener 103-93 against Washington and Jefferson College Wednesday night. First-year David Mazon scored a team-high 15 points for the Lords while Washington and Jefferson's Michael Bigley led all scorers with 25.

Five Lords finished the night in double-digit scoring led by Mazon with 15 followed by Nick Lewis with 14. Both Mazon and Gefen Bar-Cohen hauled in seven rebounds to lead Kenyon.

The Presidents, although behind schedule before the game, came out ready to play. After winning the opening tip, Michael Bagley started the scoring with a jumper 17 seconds into the game. Washington and Jefferson extended their lead to eight after two free throws with 15:46 remaining in the first half. The Lords tied the game at 19 before taking a six-point lead.

The Lords held on to their advantage for almost eight minutes of the first half before the Presidents tied the score up at 40-40. Washington and Jefferson extended its lead to as large as nine before the half. The Presidents held a 56-49 lead at halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Lords scored on a quick bucket by Lewis, but the Presidents answered with a layup of their own. Later, Washington and Jefferson grabbed a 72-58 lead. Kenyon went on a 6-0 run to slow the game down, but the Presidents answered with their own run to push their separation to a game-high 14 points. With just under 10 minutes to go, Kyran Mitchell hit a jumper to put Washington and Jefferson up 84-69. An 8-0 Lords' run cut the lead in half at 84-77.

Kenyon cut the deficit to three after a Christian Watanabe three-pointer with 4:03 left in the game. The Lords kept the game within five as the clock went down to two minutes. The Presidents made a three with 1:56 remaining to start a seven-point run that iced the game.

The Lords see their first road game on Saturday as they travel to take on Muskingum University at 2:00 p.m.
