Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lords rally, but Titans escape with one-point win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Kenyon College men's basketball team rallied from a 17-point deficit and took a late lead, only to have victory slip out of its hands. Westminster College benefited from several Kenyon turnovers, made a layup with 11 seconds left and escaped with a 77-76 win Wednesday night.

Kenyon struggled to find its shooting touch in the first half and fell behind 47-34 at halftime. Through those first 20 minutes, the Lords were 11-of-36 (30.6 percent). On the other side of the court, the host Titans piled up 11 fastbreak points and pounded the paint, pumping in 30 points from close range.

Over the first two minutes of the second half, Westminster twice moved ahead by 17 points. Right around the midway point of the half, Kenyon started to make its move, putting together a 16-2 run that took the score from 68-52 to 70-68, still in favor of Westminster. During that run, Miles Versa erupted for eight points in a span of 74 seconds and David Mazon connected on four free throws.

Still chipping away, the Lords finally caught up with the Titans at the 3:09 mark. That's when Versa, who poured in a team-high 21 points on the night, sank a pair of free throws to push Kenyon ahead 74-73. Two trips down the court later, Nick Lewis sank two more free throws, giving the Lords a 76-73 lead with 2:14 remaining.

Westminster missed its next shot, but as Kenyon looked to increase its lead, Lewis slipped through a wet spot on the floor and was called for a travel. Reese Leone took the ball the other way and hit a mid-range jumper to pull the Titans within one point.

Kenyon turned the ball over during both of its next two possessions. Leone missed a shot for the Titans, but on their next possession Anthony Ritter made a cut down low and completed a layup off a pass from Leone with just 11 seconds left.

Kenyon then looked to Versa for the game winner, but as he released his shot Westminster's Andrew Clark swatted it out of bounds. The Lords got one last look after that, but a desperation shot from Lewis fell short.

Versa's 21 points were scored on 6-of-15 shooting overall, 3-of-5 shooting from three-point land and 6-of-6 shooting at the free throw line, where the Lords were 16-of-18 (88.9 percent) as a team. Versa's stat line also included two assists and two steals.

Mazon was also 3-of-5 from long range. He finished with 13 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Juan Sergio Matabuena was 3-of-4 on three-pointers for nine points, while Lewis and Gefen Bar-Cohen each finished with seven points.

Westminster, which improved to 3-0 with the win, was paced by Ritter. He scored a game-high 25 points. Leone scored 18 and Daniel Ritter tallied 15. That trio accounted for nearly 80 percent of the Titans' scoring.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 0-4 as it heads toward its first conference game of the season, which will be Sunday at DePauw University.
