Tigers too much for Lords in conference opener

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- After four non-conference games to start the season, the Kenyon College men's basketball team matched up against their first conference opponent, the DePauw University Tigers. DePauw's Elijah Hales and Grant Niego combined for 50 points to defeat the Lords 81-64 at Neal Fieldhouse.

Miles Versa made the first shot of the game 21 seconds into the game, but the Tigers took the lead on Hales' three-point shot right after. DePauw went on to stretch their lead to 10-4. Kenyon cut the lead to one on another Versa jump shot but the Tigers continued to make shots. DePauw gained their largest lead of the first half on Niego's three-pointer, 44-31. Neither team made a bucket in the remaining 90 seconds and went to the locker room with a DePauw lead.

The Lords started the second half the same way they started the first, a Versa bucket to start the scoring. After making the lay up, Versa made his and-one free throw to cut the DePauw lead to 46-34. The Tigers continued to make shots as they extended their lead to 56-43. While the Lords tried to get back into the game, DePauw answered every Kenyon bucket to keep their double-digit lead. The Tigers pushed their lead to a game-high 22 with two and a half minutes left in the game. The Lords ended the game on a 7-2 run to make the final score 81-64.

Versa led the Lords in scoring with 13 points followed by Dylan Fuerst with 10. Nick Lewis pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the loss.

The Lords return home to Tomsich Arena on December 1 to host Ohio Wesleyan University. Tip off is at 8 p.m.
