Lords come up short against Battling Bishops

GAMBIER -- After erasing a 13 point Ohio Wesleyan lead in the second half, the Kenyon College men's basketball team fell to the Battling Bishops 64-58 on Wednesday night. The Lords fall to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play while Ohio Wesleyan improves to 4-2 overall, 1-0 in the NCAC.

Ohio Wesleyan's Jack Clement started the scoring on the Bishops' second possession when he nailed a jump shot in the lane. Miles Versa answered with his own jumper to tie the game at two. Juan Sergio Matabuena connected from deep to give the Lords their first lead of the game only to have it deleted by a Curtis White three-pointer. Ohio Wesleyan went on to take a 22-10 lead before Versa hit a free throw to start a Kenyon run. The Lords' 9-4 run cut the Bishops' lead down to eight with 2:53 left in the first half. Ohio Wesleyan scored the final five points of the half to take a 35-22 lead into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, the Lords' turned a Bishops' missed shot into their first points of the second half to cut the lead to 11. Ohio Wesleyan extended their lead to 13 after a pair of Jack Clement free throws with 15:09 left in the game. The two teams exchanged buckets over the next two minutes to keep the 13 point differential.

Over the next, 7:18 the Lords cut the Bishops' lead down. Kenyon tied the game at 48 when Gefen Bar-Cohen completed his and-one free throw. On the next possession, Clement hit a jumper only for Dylan Fuerst to answer with his own. With 4:41 left in the game, Tony Carter made a three-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan a lead they wouldn't surrender. Versa drove down the lane to make it a one point game but that would be as close as the Lords got down the stretch.

Clement led all scorers with 22 points followed by Versa with 16 while Fuerst ended the night with nine points of his own. Versa and Sergio Matabuena tied for a team-high eight rebounds in the loss.

The Lords hit the road to take on Allegheny College on Saturday.
