Turnovers plague Ladies in loss to Tigers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After committing just 22 combined turnovers in a pair of weekend wins, the Kenyon College Ladies returned to the basketball court Wednesday and racked up 19 turnovers in a 59-51 North Coast Athletic Conference loss to the Wittenberg University Tigers.

While some of the turnovers were unforced, the Wittenberg defense, which had a dozen steals, had a lot to do with the majority of them. Additionally, the Tigers defense held the Ladies to just 31.0 percent (18-of-58) shooting.

Even in their struggles, the Ladies could not be counted out. Trailing by as many as 19 in the first half, the Kenyon women cut their deficit down to seven points during two different times in the third quarter. Each time, however, Wittenberg answered with a three-pointer to extend its lead back to double-digits.

In the fourth quarter, Kenyon kept clawing away. Katie Orefice scored seven straight points in a span of five minutes and, once again, whittled the Wittenberg lead down to seven. During those same five minutes, the Ladies held the Tigers scoreless, forcing 12 consecutive missed shots.

When Wittenberg ended its drought with a Kristie Kalis layup and the 1:47 mark, Orefice, who scored nine points in the final frame, replied with two free throws to bring the margin back to seven again. Bridget Molnar followed up a minute later with an offensive rebound and put-back to knock the Wittenberg lead down to five with 28 seconds left.

From there, the Ladies were forced to foul and Wittenberg converted three of its final four shots at the stripe. Kenyon had just one more look before the final buzzer sounded and it resulted in a missed three-pointer.

Orefice finished the game with 20 points and a career-best 10 rebounds to log her first collegiate double-double. Grace Connery canned a trio of three-pointers and was Kenyon's only other double-digit scorer with 13. Claudia Cooke, who struggled with her shooting accuracy, still managed to contribute a game-high 11 rebounds.

Kalis and Delaney Willimas did most of the damage for Wittenberg. Kalis scored a team-high 19 points, while Williams pitched in with 11.

The Tigers used 14 players throughout the game and nine of them had two or more points. Kenyon played just seven, with all but one scoring points.

The loss dropped the Ladies to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in NCAC play. On the other bench, Wittenberg moved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference contests.
