Muther named to All-America team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- United Soccer Coaches announced the 2021 NCAA Division III men's All-Americans on Thursday. Among the 50 student-athletes receiving recognition was Kenyon College senior Luke Muther.

The United Soccer Coaches selections were split into three teams with Muther, a defender, taking his place among the second-team selections.

The All-America award capped off a remarkable season for Muther, who was named both an All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) first-team selection and the NCAC Defensive Player of the Year. Prior to reaching All-America status, Muther was named a first-team pick among the United Soccer Coaches All-Region VII Team.

During the 2021 campaign, he helped a Kenyon back line that gave up just 15 goals in 20 games played. That included just five goals in nine conference contests. Muther and the defense posted seven shutouts with a team goals against average (.730) that ranked second in the NCAC and 34th among all NCAA Division III teams.

Muther started all 20 games for the Lords, who went 16-3-1, won the conference crown and made it to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. When leaving his defensive position to join the attack, Muther scored one goal and assisted on four others.

The All-America award is a first for Muther, who became the Lords' 22nd overall and sixth in the last five seasons to earn the award.
