GAMBIER, Ohio – Hiram College (10-9, 5-1 NCAC) won for the seventh time in the last nine games on Saturday as it swept a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Kenyon College (0-4, 0-2 NCAC). The Terriers shut out the Ladies 10-0 in the opener before triumphing 13-3 in the second affair.
GAME ONE
Jeskari Rodriguez was superb in the circle for Hiram in the opener, allowing just two hits while fanning six. Offensively, four different Hiram players recorded multiple hits including three each from Mariah Sheffield and Kaitlyn Hager.
Right from the get-go, Hiram got in gear with hits from Abriana Schwartz and Kaitlyn Hager. After a fielder's choice RBI from Giselle Bahena, Sheffield singled through the left side scoring two more.
That 3-0 lead was then doubled in the second which included a two-run homer from Sheffield to left center. Hiram added four more runs in the fourth and fifth frames including run-scoring hits from Schwartz and Hager.
Kenyon's bats only managed to put one runner in scoring position while
Kassie Rimel and
Clare McMahon totaled the team's two hits.
GAME TWO
Another fast start by the visitors put Kenyon in a 4-0 hole heading into the bottom of the second.
At that point, the Ladies rallied back to make it interesting. Hiram got two quick outs which brought up senior
Kathryn Riggs. Following a full-count walk to Riggs,
Tori Rogers entered the box and was hit, putting two along the base paths. Third baseman
Paige Milhon then reached the base, drawing another walk from Hiram pitcher Bailey Scheck.
That's when magic came the way of McMahon. The left-handed batter smoked a liner to right center field clearing the bases. Her hit brought the scoreboard to 4-3, Terriers.
For Kenyon, though, that offensive spurt could not be replicated after that. Scheck allowed just two more hits and struck out six, allowing the Terriers to expand their lead.
In the fourth, Hager added a two-run double to push Hiram up 6-3. After scoring a single run in the sixth, Hiram really opened things up with a half-dozen runs in the seventh. Highlighting that frame was a solo home run from Lauryn Olguin just inside the left-field foul pole.
By the end of the doubleheader, Hiram had out-hit Kenyon 26-5 including 10 multi-base hits.
Tomorrow, the Ladies will try to get on the win column with a visit to Hiram for another NCAC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
