Ladies battle but come up short at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio -- Kenyon College gave its strongest performance to date on Sunday but ended up falling to Hiram College in a North Coast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Herndon Field. The Terriers (12-9, 7-1 NCAC) claimed a 4-0 game-one victory before edging the Ladies 3-2 in the second contest.

GAME ONE

Kenyon's (0-6, 0-4 NCAC) defense and pitching held up well for the first time this season, giving the team a chance at victory. In the circle, Tori Rogers tossed a complete game, struck out a pair and induced 14 flyouts with two groundouts.

Outside of a three-run first inning for Hiram, which included an RBI triple and two-run homer, Rogers and the Ladies' defense surrendered only one more run.

In that span, Kenyon's offense had ample opportunities to score.

Clare McMahon tallied her team-leading fourth double of the year to start the game, but ended up being stranded at third.

Two frames later in the third, Rogers and Paige Milhon drew back-to-back walks with no outs. The next trio of at-bats, however, ended with no runs being pushed across.

Over the next four innings, Kenyon put four more on the base paths, but could not catch fire. By game's end, the Ladies had left seven stranded.

GAME TWO

Competition was even more tight between Kenyon and Hiram in the second affair.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the second frame, the Ladies knotted things up with a Rogers RBI single to center field. That plated Kathryn Riggs

That 1-1 score remained until the fifth inning. In the circle, Emily Pater and her defense limited Hiram to just one runner in scoring position between the second and fourth frames.

Once Kenyon returned to the batter's box in the fifth, it took its first lead of the season. Bella Albrecht's double down the left-field line put her and McMahon into scoring position. Two batters later, Madde Hyland drove in McMahon with a single through the left side.

Kenyon had bases loaded later, but a Jeskari Rodriguez strikeout ended the top-half of the fifth.

Facing a bit of pressure, the Terriers responded. Lexa Avalos connected with a one-out RBI single to right before Kaitlyn Hager provided the go-ahead hit on a two-out single to center, scoring Abriana Schwartz.

Trailing 3-2 heading to the sixth, the Ladies looked to be in good shape before a tough call at home plate. With two out, Albrecht doubled down the left-field chalk which sent McMahon toward home. In what looked like catcher's interference, Hiram's Gisella Bahena tagged McMahon, and the home plate umpire signaled the out, keeping the score at 3-2.

In the seventh, Rodriguez retired the Kenyon side to preserve victory.

By game's end, Albrecht had two doubles while seven others had one hit. Pater tossed a complete game, allowed one earned run and induced 10 groundouts.

Next on the schedule for the Ladies is a home doubleheader on April 17 against The College of Wooster starting at 1 p.m.
