GAMBIER, Ohio – The College of Wooster (12-6, 7-3 NCAC) swept by Kenyon College (0-8, 0-6 NCAC) on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader. The Fighting Scots won in shutout fashion in game one, 7-0, before claiming an 11-1 victory in game two.
GAME ONE
Wooster pitcher Olivia Johnson was outstanding in the circle during the opener. She totaled 83 pitches, registered 68 strikes, allowed just two hits and fanned nine. Johnson also induced nine groundouts and allowed Kenyon to reach scoring position just twice.
With the Fighting Scots controlling the Ladies' bats, not much run support was needed. In the second, Stephanie Griffin's RBI single broke a scoreless tie.
That 1-0 lead was then extended by three in the third frame. Emmalee Cooke drove in Brooke Swain with a sacrifice fly before Molly Likins drilled a homer to right-center field a few batters later. The visitors led 4-0 at that point and later added a single run in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Kenyon's offense struggled throughout the game. Remarkably, only
Bella Albrecht reached base: twice with singles and another by Wooster error. By game's end, the Ladies were 2-for-24 in the batter's box.
GAME TWO
A couple first-inning errors resulted in Wooster getting ahead 4-0 and sitting comfortably the rest of the way.
Swain started the game reaching on a throwing error before a dropped fly ball two at-bats later for Likins loaded the bases. What followed included a sacrifice fly by Heidi Likins and an RBI single from Griffin. Swain also scored on a wild pitch as the Fighting Scots went up four.
After Wooster added another run in the second, the Ladies had a chance to break into the 5-0 deficit. A
Madde Hyland single put runners on the corners, however, a strikeout by pitcher Marissa Norgrove ended that chance.
In the third, Anna Norby and Swain each drove in runs, pushing the visitor's lead to 7-0. It wasn't until the home half of the frame that Kenyon manufactured its only score of the doubleheader.
Paige Milhon started the inning with a double to left field before Albrecht drove her two batters later. The purple and white added just one more hit after that from Hyland.
Wooster and Kenyon will meet again tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. with the Fighting Scots serving as hosts.
