Fighting Scots edge Lords in NCAC twin bill

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster (13-5, 8-2 NCAC) won a pair of close games over Kenyon College (3-3, 3-3 NCAC) in North Coast Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday at Art Murray Field.

GAME ONE

A 7-0 lead after four frames proved important for the Fighting Scots who eventually won by two.

Early on, it was the Lords that threatened. In the top of the second, Kyle Dwyer and Brent Henderson each singled to put two on with one out. A couple batters later, Trenton DiFilippo drew a full-count walk which loaded the bases.  The opportunity to strike first blood was thwarted, though, as Wooster pitcher Evan Faxon struck out Kenyon's next batter.

The home squad then responded. Three of Wooster's first four batters reached base in the second and in the fifth at-bat, Gabe Sherman smacked a bases-clearing double to left center. One more run came across for the Fighting Scots who led 4-0.

An inning later, Sherman added another double, this time extending the score to 6-0. Wooster closed its scoring efforts in the fourth as Alex Gasper connected with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Now down 7-0, Kenyon started a comeback. In the fifth, Jake Brown led off with a double before scoring a couple sequences later on a wild pitch. The Lords inched a little closer later as Henderson and Will Sturgeon each drove in runs on a single and triple, respectively.

The Lords had one more chance in the seventh. Andrew Rabinowitz led off with a single to right and in the next at-bat, Dwyer bombed a two-run shot to right field. Kenyon trailed 7-5 at that point, but could not find anything more as Colin Springer closed the game with three-straight outs.

GAME TWO

Wooster scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to overcome a 2-0 Kenyon lead en route to a 3-2 victory in the second contest.

Prior to that, the Lords got single runs in the second and third frames to go ahead.

In the second inning, a lead-off single from Dwyer got things going for Kenyon before Sturgeon added another one-bagger through the left side to score his teammate. An inning later, Henderson took a 2-1 pitch up the middle and plated Ryan Page.

Kenyon had a couple more opportunities in the fourth and fifth innings, however, could not find any more runs.

Trailing 2-0, Wooster was able to fight back in the home half of the fifth. After a 44-minute rain delay, Gasper doubled and then scored on a wild pitch to bring the tally to 2-1. A few batters later, Tyler Chumita took a full-count offering to center field and drove home Dean Brown. The home squad then took the lead as Ben Gbur connected with a sacrifice fly to right center, scoring Dominic Stilliana.

The Lords' last chance to tie the game in the seventh brought a Page double down the right-field line. However, Wooster pitcher Mitchell Reardon struck out Kenyon's next three batters to close the contest.

Kenyon totaled six hits by six different players but also left eight stranded.

Next on the schedule for the Lords is an April 21 doubleheader at Allegheny College starting at 1 p.m.
