GAMBIER, Ohio – Allegheny College pitchers Conor Deasy and Nolan Thompson keyed a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep over Kenyon College on Thursday at McCloskey Field. The Gators' duo limited the purple and white to just one run and seven hits as the Gators won 4-0 and 3-1.
GAME ONE
Deasy struck out a half-dozen and induced 12 flyouts as he went the distance in the opener. His performance also brought just four Lords reaching scoring position.
With the Gators getting a solid pitching outing, it didn't need much offense to earn a game-one win.
From the get-go, Allegheny put pressure on the Lords' defense and scored in the first. Chase Chodkowski led off with a double to left field and two batters later, was driven in by a single from Brett Heckert.
Down 1-0, the Lords did have multiple chances in the second frame to tie it up. Left-fielder
Kyle Dwyer singled before
Ayden Head was hit-by-pitch. However, Deasy retired the next three at-bats with a pair of flyouts and a line-ball out.
The score remained 1-0 until the fourth. At that point, the Gators doubled their lead with an RBI single from Ryan Dougherty. Allegheny added two more runs in the sixth for its final tallies.
Kenyon's last chance in the seventh saw its first two at-bats, Head and
Brent Henderson, reach base. However, the Lords weren't able to do anything after that and ended the contest with a bases-loaded strikeout.
GAME TWO
The Lords got off to a great start in the second game.
Will Sturgeon crushed his third homer of the year over the left-center field fence giving the dugout and fans some energy.
That shot turned out to be short-lived, though, as Thompson did not allow another Kenyon run the rest of the way. In fact, Thompson allowed just two more hits and induced a combined 17 flyouts and groundouts.
Down a run, Allegheny knotted things up in the third. Tyler Hettich doubled to deep center to start the frame and a few batters later, Luke Chutko provided a two-out single pushing the tying run across.
A frame later, the visitors took the lead for good. Jake Stotsky tripled to the corner of right field and two batters later, Dougherty singled up the middle for the go-ahead run.
The Gators' scoring efforts were concluded in the fifth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Heckert hit into a double play at second base, but in doing so, pushed catcher Brayden Cartwright across home.
In Kenyon's last two offensive innings, only Sturgeon and
J.J. Conway reached base with a walk and single, respectively.
By the end of the doubleheader, Kenyon was just 7-for-48 in the batter's box and left 10 stranded.
Next on the schedule for the Lords is a home make-up date with The College of Wooster on April 28 starting at 1 p.m.
