GAMBIER, Ohio – A standout pitching performance from
Ayden Head in game one helped the Kenyon College (4-6, 4-6 NCAC) baseball team to a doubleheader split versus The College of Wooster on Wednesday at McCloskey Field. Kenyon took the opener 5-2 before falling to the 25th-ranked Fighting Scots 9-2 in the second contest.
GAME ONE
Head kept the potent Wooster (18-6, 9-3 NCAC) offense at bay in the opener. He tossed 6.1 innings, fanned a season-high seven batters, gave up just two hits and allowed a pair of unearned runs. He also got a big boost from his defense which turned a combined 12 flyouts and groundouts.
Wooster got the first lead of the game following an error in center field. However, it would tally just one more run the rest of the way.
Then in the home half of the first, the Lords went in front for good.
Brent Henderson drew a one-out hit-by-pitch which brought junior catcher
Andrew Rabinowitz to the box. On the first pitch he saw, Rabinowitz crushed a shot to left-center field, giving the Lords a 2-1 lead.
Following a scoreless second, Kenyon came back with two more runs in the third. Henderson led off with a walk before Rabinowitz connected again, this time with a double to left-center. A few sequences later, Rabinowitz scored on a pass ball.
For Wooster, it was retired in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Lords got their final run in the sixth courtesy of
Jake Brown's RBI single which plated
Jimmy Clark.
In the seventh, Wooster did get a few base runners and scored on a passed ball. However, relievers
Patrick Craig and
Sam Richards, who earned the save, were able to close the game.
Rabinowitz and Brown each had two hits to lead the Lords' offense.
GAME TWO
A wacky fourth inning, which saw Wooster score a half-dozen runs with no hits, ultimately led the visitors to a game-two victory.
Up until that point, the Lords took the lead in the first when
Kyle Dwyer smacked a two-out double to left-center field scoring Rabinowitz.
Wooster, though, fought back two frames later to take a 2-1 lead. Zach Schuch started the third with a double to center. A couple batters later, shortstop Tyler Chumita connected with a single to left center, giving the Fighting Scots their second lead of the game.
Once the fourth inning rolled around, the Fighting Scots went ahead comfortably, and in very much an odd way.
Four batters were hit and five were walked as Wooster scored six runs, four of which came when the bases were loaded. There was also a sacrifice fly from Ben Gbur. After all that, the Fighting Scots led 7-1. Heading to the bottom of the fourth, Wooster led 7-1.
The Lords did get a run back in the home half of the inning as
J.J. Conway singled to short, plating
Jake Brown who had a triple to start.
However, that would be it for the Kenyon offense. On the mound for Wooster was Steve Spidell who tossed a complete game, fanned six and scattered four hits.
Next on the schedule for the Lords is a trip to Hiram College this Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
