HIRAM, Ohio – Hiram College (22-13) took both contests over the Kenyon College softball team on Saturday, winning by 15-0 and 8-0 scores at Herndon Field. The same two teams will meet again tomorrow at the Kenyon Softball Complex starting at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE
The Terriers scored all of their runs in the first two frames in the opener.
In the first, Hiram raced out to a 7-0 advantage. Abriana Schwartz scored the first run after a Ladies throwing error and that was followed up by Mariah Sheffield who connected with an RBI single to center scoring Kaitlyn Hager.
The hosts then scored its fifth, sixth and seventh runs on two-out RBI hits from Schwartz, Sheffield and Giselle Bahena.
Kenyon (0-16) responded with just one base runner a frame later before the Terriers scored eight more in the bottom of the second.
There were eight-straight hits from the Terriers in the second, started by Bahena's triple down the right-field line. She later added an RBI single which brought the tally to 14-0. Lauryn Olguin also contributed to the home team's cause with a two-run double. In all, six players drove in runs in the second for Hiram.
For the Ladies, single hits from
Bella Albrecht and
Tori Rogers in the third and fourth innings, respectively, turned out to be the only sparks Kenyon found over the rest of the game.
Hager, Hiram's pitcher, tossed a complete game, scattered just three hits, fanned three and induced a combined 11 groundouts and flyouts.
GAME TWO
Through the first three innings of the second contest, Kenyon was holding its own much better.
In the circle,
Emily Pater got a pair of strikeouts, allowed just one run on a Schwartz RBI double in the third, and induced five groundouts.
In the other dugout, Jeskari Rodgriguez did a good job, too, by allowing just three hits while striking out four.
The strong defensive play came to an end, though, for Kenyon in the bottom of the fourth.
Angel Santellan and Stafford each produced hits in the first three at-bats. Then, after Pater struck out Olguin, the Terriers scored seven in a row with two out.
Giselle Chavez boosted the home squad's lead to 3-0 with a two-run single to center field. She later scored by error to make it 4-0. After that play, Hager drove in two more to push the scoreboard to 6-0.
Hiram got its seventh and eighth runs courtesy of Bahena and Sheffield who tallied an RBI single and double, respectively.
The Ladies' offense struggled again, attaining four hits from Pater,
Olivia Hurley,
Paige Milhon and
Kassie Rimel. By the end of the doubleheader, Kenyon notched a combined seven hits.
