Hornets outlast Ladies at the Point

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Ladies' comeback efforts came up short in a tightly-contested volleyball matchup with the Kalamazoo College Hornets, who held on for a 3-1 victory Friday evening.

This was the Ladies' first game of the Battle at the Point, a weekend-long competition consisting of interconference play between the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).

The Hornets were able to seize control of the match from the early goings. In the first set they climbed in front and never took their foot off of the gas pedal. Kalamazoo won the set 25-17, recording eleven kills to the Ladies' eight, while committing fewer errors than their opponent. It was a struggle for Kenyon, which posted a .028 hitting percentage.

Kalamazoo kicked their game into another gear in the second set. They committed zero errors with eleven kills and had a sterling .407 hitting percentage. While Kenyon had more kills than the Hornets for the set, they did so in seven more opportunities and committed five errors. Despite dropping the set 25-16, it was a stronger performance for the Ladies, who had their eyes on a comeback.

Kenyon backed up its stronger second-set performance by rebounding to take the third 25-19. From the beginning it seemed like the Ladies looked more confident on the court, playing a very aggressive brand of volleyball. They recorded 15 kills to the Hornets' nine, constantly looking to capitalize on any opportunities to get themselves back in the match.

The fourth set proved to be the most tense of the match, with neither team able to pull more than a couple of points ahead. Everytime one side clawed in front, the other one would seem to find a way to squirrel their way back into the thick of things. The nailbiter of a set ultimately went to the Hornets, who took it by a 25-23 margin to secure the 3-1 match win.

Despite the loss, the Ladies received a strong performance from Macy Reimbold, who had 13 kills, the highest total of anyone in the match. Reimbold also finished second on the team in digs with ten. Ellie Luciano led the way for the Ladies with 17 digs. Maya Sapsford chipped in 20 assists and Jac Cousineau had 13.

Kenyon has its second game of the Battle at the Point on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Ladies will take on St. Mary's College (IN) in another chance to prove themselves against an MIAA opponent.
