Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Accuracy evades Kenyon in loss to Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio -- For the second straight game, the Kenyon College men's basketball team struggled with efficiency on the offensive end. Monday, at Hiram College, the visiting Lords launched 67 shots, but made only 25 of them in a 75-66 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) loss to the host Terriers.

Since the turn of the calendar year, the Lords just haven't been able to find much accuracy. They shot 36.1 percent in a home loss to Oberlin College on Saturday and then shot 37.3 percent in Monday's loss to the Terriers. On the other side of the court, Oberlin and Hiram fired at a combined rate of 48.7 percent against Kenyon.

Despite their shooting struggles, the Lords (2-11, 0-6 NCAC) were never really ruled out of the contest at Hiram until the final minutes. The game did witness four different lead changes and three tied scores.

Hiram led for most of the first half, but never by more than five points. At the end of the half, Alex Boyd buried a three-pointer for Kenyon, but Hiram responded with a triple from Chance Wells, who got the Terriers to the half with a slim 31-28 lead.

At the start of the second half, four different players scored for the Terriers, who built their best lead (39-32) to that point. Kenyon did not fold. Instead, the Lords went on a quick 8-0 run to reclaim the lead at 40-39 with 15:41still remaining on the clock. During the spurt, Anthony Testa and Nick Lewis drained three-pointers for Kenyon.

That, however, would be the final lead for the Lords. Hiram answered with a 13-0 run over the next six minutes. Kenyon attempted to claw its way back into things and even got as close as four points with 3:33 left, but Hiram closed out the victory by tacking on a 9-0 run that made it improbable for the Lords to come back.

Boyd led Kenyon with 14 points, while Lewis scored 11 and latched on to a team-best eight rebounds. No other Kenyon player had more than four rebounds, as Hiram controlled the glass, 49-33. Other double-digit scorers for Kenyon included Miles Versa, who had 12, and Testa, who tallied 10.

Hiram also had a quartet of double-digit scorers. Leading the way with 15 points was Brodgie Gordon. Michael Ewart had 12 points, to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds. Sherman Cox scored 11 and Oliver Clingain contributed 10 for the Terriers (4-8,1-5 NCAC).

Next up for Kenyon is a road trip to The College of Wooster to face the Fighting Scots on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
