WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Lords suffered a difficult defeat at the hands of The College of Wooster Scots, 91-77, Wednesday evening on the road. Despite leading by as many as 13 points after a well-played first half, the Lords saw their lead evaporate late in the game after an offensive barrage by the Scots.
Â
The game was a high-intensity, back-and-forth affair from the beginning, with both sides trading buckets. Neither team led by more than three points until a Nick Lewis' trey put the Lords up 22-18 with 12:23 in the first half. That bucket began a shift of momentum in the Lords' favor, sparking a 13-5 run that gave Kenyon a 32-23 lead.
The Scots did not let the deficit get to them and began to mount a run of their own, bringing the game within three points at 36-33.
After starting the game 6-of-10 from behind the arc, the Kenyon shooters went cold, missing their next eight attempted triples. Kenyon then snapped out of its funk with a pair of baskets by
Dylan Fuerst to regain a seven-point cushion and some breathing room. The Lords were able to carry that momentum forward into a commanding 49-38 lead at the halfway point.
The Scots opened the second half strong on the back of stellar play from Jamir Billings. Billings opened the period with a 13-point, one assist run, punctuated by his third trey of the half that tied the game at 53-53.Â
The Lords were feeling the pressure, but responded with a 9-0 run of their own, with Miles Versa scoring six points during the burst. But as they did all game, the Scots started to claw away at their deficit slowly but surely.Â
Two Kenyon turnovers and a steal by Wooster's leading scorer, Brandon Styers, suddenly tied things up again at 68-68 with nine minutes left. Wooster continued to remain in control from there, consistently breaking through the Lords' defense to go up 81-73 with 4:35 left to play. That deficit proved to be too much for the Lords to come back from, as Kenyon struggled to hit their stride on offense the rest of the way.Â
Despite the loss, Versa had a sensational game for Kenyon. The first-year poured in 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting. No other Lord scored in double figures. David Mazon and Lewis had strong games, putting up identical eight point, seven rebound, one assist stat lines.Â
The loss to Wooster was the third straight for Kenyon, which fell to 2-12 for the season and 0-7 against the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Lords will hope to bounce back in their next contest on Saturday when they return to Gambier to square off against Wabash College at 2 p.m.Â
