Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team sent seven players to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championship. The Owls saw success in both singles and doubles over the three-day tournament.
Overall, Kenyon went 10-7 in singles play. Eleni Dakos, a junior, had the most success in singles play, going 3-1 in the Red Draw and advancing to the draw's final match. Dakos' journey included a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bailey Higgins of Webster University in the round of 16 before winning 6-3, 6-3 against Washington University of St. Louis' Natalie Muldowney in the quarterfinal round. Dakos cruised to the final after another straight-set win, a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Katherine Taylor of Transylvania University. However, Dakos finished as the runner-up after falling 6-2, 6-1 against Claudia Ng from the University of Chicago.
Allaire Berl, a first-year, also competed in the Red Draw, winning her opening match against Leah Hosang of Saint Mary's College 6-1, 6-1. She finished with a 1-1 singles mark after falling 6-3, 6-2 to North Central College's Kensington Payne in the quarterfinals.
A trio of Owls posted 2-1 singles records as Lalasa Nagireddy, Eleni Lazaridou, and Shadia Amado Aguad each picked up wins in the rounds of 64 and 32 before falling in the round of 16 of their respective draws.
In the Green Draw, Nagireddy, a sophomore, won a pair of nail-biting matches that needed to be decided by a third set. She earned a comeback victory over Transylvania University's Grace Gardner, winning 4-6, 6-4, 10-6. In the round of 32, Nagireddy won 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 against Hannah Quick of Denison University in a taste of North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action.
In the ITA Draw, Lazaridou was seeded ninth and picked up two solid wins in straight sets, including a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 decision over Case Western Reserve University's Anna Kan. Lazaridou's success earned her an imposing matchup against Sylwia Mikos from the University of Chicago, the top-seeded player in the draw. Lazaridou was unfazed as she took the opening set 6-1, but she could not overcome the No. 1-seeded Mikos, falling 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16. Amado Aguad had a similar result in her journey through the ITA draw as a seven-seed. The first-year secured a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 comeback win over Carolyn Tsung of Washington University of St. Louis before a 6-4, 6-0 win over DePauw University's Sonal Matta, an NCAC foe. Amado Aguad faced Miranda Yuan of the University of Chicago, a nine-seed, in the round of 16, falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in a back-and-forth battle.
Both Catriona MacIntosh and Erika Pontillo, a pair of seniors, fell in their round of 64 matches to nine-seed opponents in the ITA Draw. However, Pontillo made a run in the voluntary consolation bracket, going 3-1 and making it to the semifinal match.
In doubles, the Owls were a combined 4-3 across three doubles teams. Dakos and Lazaridou were seeded sixth and earned a first-round bye, while Berl and Pontillo also had a bye as a nine-seed. Berl and Pontillo won 8-6 over Case Western Reserve University's duo of Anna Kan and Nina Hoog, but their run ended in the round of 16 after falling 8-3 to Shianna Guo and Mikos from the University of Chicago, a one-seed. Kenyon's pair of Eleni's had a nice run as a duo, winning 8-4 and 8-1 to advance to the quarterfinal round. However, a ninth-seeded team from the University of Chicago composed of Perene Wang and Claudia Ng ended the Owls' run, winning 8-3 in the round of eight.
Nagireddy and Amado Aguad went 1-1 in doubles after an 8-3 win over Sonal Matta and Kiley Shaw of DePauw University and an 8-3 loss to Lauren Khou and Nicole Geller from the University of Chicago, a seven-seed. However, the Owls' duo made a run in the voluntary doubles consolation bracket. Nagireddy and Amado Aguad won 8-5 and 8-7 (7-1) before a walkover in the round of eight but fell 8-5 in the semifinal round.
The ITA Regional Championships was the last tournament on the Owls' fall schedule, and the team will be back in action for their traditional season in the spring.
