Four Owls earn spots on All-Region Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Four members of the Kenyon College Owls men's soccer team were awarded positions on the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's All-Region VII Team, which was announced by United Soccer Coaches. Luke Muther and Scott Upton were among the first-team selections, while Alem Duratovic and Sebastian Gaese gained spots on the second team.

The quartet guided Kenyon to a 19-2-1 record this past season, one that included the program's seventh straight North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular-season championship and its ninth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

A couple weeks ago, Upton, a senior, was named the NCAC Midfielder of the Year. His All-Region honor from United Soccer Coaches was the third in his career. This past season, Upton started all 22 games, scored ten goals, dished out five assists and ranked third on the team with 25 points. He closed out his Kenyon career with four-year numbers that include 28 goals, 16 assists, and 72 points.

Muther, a senior defender, collected his second straight United Soccer Coaches first-team honor. That came on the heels of being named a first-team pick to the All-NCAC Team. He missed the first few games of the season, but returned to the pitch to steer a defense that allowed just 12 goals all season. The Kenyon defense posted 12 shutouts and its 0.545 goals against average ranked 11th among all NCAA Division III teams. To boot, Muther chalked up two assists this season, giving him nine for his career.

Back in the offensive zone, Duratovic and Gaese were Kenyon's scoring leaders. Duratovic, a sophomore gaining his first All-Region award, led the team, as well as all players in the NCAC, with 18 goals and 38 points. His 18 goals tied for the sixth best single-season total in Kenyon history and his output of 38 points goes down as the 10th best mark.

Gaese, a senior, led the team and the conference with 10 assists. He paired that with 10 goals to register 30 points in 22 starts. He and Upton tied for third place among the NCAA's top goal scorers and his 30 points ranked second only to Duratovic. Gaese concluded his Kenyon career with 31 goals, 18 assists and 80 points. His goal total ranks eighth best in the program's record book and his point total ranks ninth best. The All-Region honor for Gaese, a three-time All-NCAC pick, was the first of his career.
