Cooke notches double-double in loss to Earlham

RICHMOND, Ind. -- Kenyon College junior Claudia Cooke whipped up a double-double Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough for the Owls to get a road win at Earlham College. The host Quakers pulled away in the fourth quarter to produce a 58-55 non-conference victory.

Cooke didn't shoot the ball particularly well (3-for-10), but her aggressive play down low led to multiple trips to the free throw line, where she went 10-of-14. That resulted in a team-high 16 points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds. The double-double was her second of the season and the tenth of her Kenyon career.

Early in the game it was three-pointers from Katie Orefice and Mikayla Rudolph that sprung the Owls to a 10-7 lead. Buckets from Bela Krslovic and Anissa Hardy followed, giving Kenyon a seven-point lead, its largest of the game.

Earlham, however, closed out the first quarter on a 6-0 run to pull within one point. That momentum carried into the second quarter, as the Quakers extended their lead to a game-high 10 points. They went on a 13-2 run to open the quarter.

Before the teams got to the break, Rudolph buried another three-pointer for Kenyon and Cooke tallied five points in four minutes to bring the Owls deficit down to four, at 28-24.

The third quarter didn't feature much scoring, but Kenyon did pump in seven straight points to take a 31-28 advantage with 7:50 left on the clock. Almost four minutes later, Earlham tied the score on a three-pointer from Janaiya Bright, who finished with a game-high 20 points. A few minutes after that, Bright rang up two more and the Quakers took a 36-33 lead into the final frame.

After scoring eight and nine points, respectively, in the third quarter, Earlham and Kenyon each scored 22 points in the fourth quarter. Kenyon got the margin down to one early in the fourth, but Earlham looked to Bright, who ignited a 10-1 run to push the Quakers back in front by 10 points.

Kenyon continued to claw away and, following a jumper from Hardy and two free throws from Cooke, whittled the Earlham lead back down to two points. That put things at 54-52 with 46 seconds left.

Alexis Gibson then nailed a three-ball for Earlham. Kenyon responded with a jumper from Orefice and a free throw from Krslovic, but with only seven seconds remaining, Kenyon was forced to foul. Bright hit one free throw, allowing Kenyon one last frantic look, but a three-pointer from Orefice missed the mark as the buzzer sounded.

Orefice finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Rudolph tacked on 11 points, while Hardy had six points and nine boards for Kenyon, which slipped to 1-3 with the loss.
