Lords storm past Presidents in season-opener

GAMBIER, Ohio – In the home and season-opener for the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team, the Lords jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating Washington and Jefferson College, 16-4. In the game, Kenyon featured 12 goal-scorers with six players picking up an assist.

The Lords' opening goal came three minutes into the game when Jack Giuffre found Matt Pollack on the wing, rifling his shot past the Presidents' goalkeeper. Only 30 seconds later, Giuffre picked up another assist on Chase MacCartee's goal. The duo connected once more with 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter to give Kenyon a 3-0 lead. After collecting three assists, Giuffre took care of business himself as he scored on the extra-man opportunity. The junior attacker found Joe Bolea in front of the cage with three minutes left in the first for his fourth assist on the day. The Lords final goal in the first came from Mike Matteo with 1:43 left in the quarter.

Going into the second quarter with a 6-0 lead, Kenyon tacked on another point on Declan Curry's goal. Washington and Jefferson scored their first goal of the game with 10:30 left before halftime, only to be answered by goals from Ethan Dewbrey and Leo Cowie. At halftime, the Lords held a 9-1 lead, outshooting the Presidents 36-14.

Washington and Jefferson scored the first goal of the second half, but Kenyon answered right back as Cowie collected his second goal of the game. Nathan Junk scored his first goal of the season with 9:37 remaining in the third to push the Kenyon lead to 11-2. Following Junk's goal, Rollins Heath scored his first goal of the year. Hill Carter added his name to the scoresheet with 4:59 left in the third before Heath scored on an extra-man opportunity 30 seconds after.

The Lords' final goals of the game came early in the fourth quarter as Weston Powell scored with 13:26 left and Sam Hatfield scored with 10:04 remaining. Kenyon's defense held strong for the next 7:15 until Sam Mey scored the President's last goal of the game, making the score 16-4.

Kenyon (1-0) returns to the field on Saturday as they travel to Columbus to take on Capital at 1 p.m.
