Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lords can’t overcome Tiger treys

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Wittenberg University Tigers converted their first seven three-point attempts, built an early 17-point lead Saturday and rode that momentum to an 82-64 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory over the visiting Kenyon College men's basketball team.

Kenyon opened with a quick 4-0 lead, but a trey from Brice Hill sparked a 13-0 run for Wittenberg. In addition to Hill's three-pointer, the Tigers' early outburst included three-balls from Josh Tolliver and Ridge Young, who connected on two consecutive shots from long distance to put Wittenberg in front 16-6 within the first five minutes of the game.

Juan Sergio Matabuena answered with a three-pointer for Kenyon, but those were the Lords' only points during a five-minute dry spell.

As the first half played out, Tolliver ended up going 2-of-2 from three-point range and Hill was 3-for-3. The Tigers, who only missed one three-pointer in the half, went ahead by as many as 17 before settling on a 43-30 advantage at the break.

Miles Versa and David Mazon did what they could to keep Kenyon in contention, combining to score 17 of the Lords' first-half total.

Mazon was held to six for the game's entirety, but Versa went on to rack up a game-high 25 points, one shy of his season best. Anthony Testa was the only other Lord to register a double-digit scoring total. He was 3-of-9 on three-point attempts and finished with 11 points.

Wittenberg cooled off, but only slightly, in the second half. The Tigers were 5-of-8 on three-point attempts over the final 20 minutes and finished the contest 12-of-16 (75.0 percent) from behind the arc. Tolliver finished 3-of-3 with 20 points, Young was 3-of-4 with 13 points and Hill was 3-of-5 with 11 points.

In the second half, the Tigers moved ahead by as many as 22 points late in the game. Kenyon got its deficit down to a dozen with about five minutes remaining, but Wittenberg retaliated with a 10-0 spurt that sealed the outcome.

Kenyon (2-18, 0-13 NCAC) and Wittenberg (10-9, 8-4 NCAC) will play again tomorrow in Gambier, as a make-up for a game that was postponed on January 8.
