Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Lucien Kisch

Ladies fall on the road to Battling Bishops

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team fought hard but could not keep up with the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops in the second half, losing 83-59 on Saturday afternoon. It was the Ladies' third straight defeat, dropping their record to 5-15 for the season.

The Battling Bishops got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 10-0 lead to open the game. The Ladies were unphased, however, and began fighting back. The defense began to pick up the slack and Ladies' shots began to fall in. Two made free-throws by Greta Propp tied the score up at 14-14.

The Ladies immediately fell behind again, with the deficit going all the way to 29-20 with 8:35 minutes remaining in the half. But once again, the Ladies responded well to adversity. Sparked by Madelyn Anderson's three-point shot and four straight points from Claudia Cooke, Kenyon went on a nine point run to tie things up at 29-29. Yet in this game of runs, Ohio Wesleyan wasted little time going on a 9-0 run of their own to put the Battling Bishops up 38-29 at the halfway point. Katie Orefice led the Ladies with ten points during the half.

The second half was all about the Battling Bishops from the onset. In the third quarter, the Ladies were outscored 18-3 to open the period, leading to their largest deficit of the game. Despite some more signs of life as the quarter closed, finishing with a 8-4 run, the period ended with Kenyon trailing 61-40. The Ladies failed to tighten up the score in the fourth quarter, with the final whistle blowing with an 83-59 victory for Ohio Wesleyan.

Orefice led all Kenyon scorers with 18 points. Propp chipped in an additional 11 and hauled in six rebounds. Cooke led the team in rebounds with eight while Anderson added eight points and  team-high three assists.

The Battling Bishops out-shot the Ladies 46.4 percent to Kenyon's 34 percent. Strong free-throw shooting kept the Ladies in the game, as they went 17-20 from the charity stripe. However, Ohio Wesleyan's 25 assisted buckets outweighed the Ladies' eight.

The Ladies will look to get back on track tomorrow, Sunday February 6, when they take on The College of Wooster at home. When those two teams played on January 26, the Ladies lost in a nail-biter 71-68. The game tips off at 2 p.m.
