Third inning lifts Bullets over Lords

FORT PIERCE, FL – After a big third inning the Gettysburg College Bullets took the lead and never looked back, defeating the Kenyon College baseball team 8-6. The Bullets scored seven of their eight runs on singles, recording no extra base hits in the game.

The Lords struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Edwin Groff singled through the left side to score Alexander Hoskins from second base.

In the top of the third, a single and a hit by pitch set up a sacrifice bunt for the Bullets to place runners on second and third with one out. Three straight singles tied the game at one and gave Gettysburg their first lead of the day. After a groundout to move runners up, the Bullets placed a single to plate another run. Gettysburg chased Kenyon starter Sam Richards out of the game on another hit batsman with the score at 5-1. Joel Biery came in to limit the damage but the Bullets plated another before he could escape the inning.

Looking to cut into the lead, Nate Rosen singled and Alex Gow reached base by getting hit by a pitch. Andrew Rabinowitz stepped up and lifted a ball into the right-center gap, scoring Rosen and Gow.

The Bullets tacked on another in the top of the fifth as an errant throw trying to throw out the runner at third ended up in left field.

Groff came up big again in the home half of the sixth, tripling in Rabinowitz from first. After six complete, the Bullets led the Lords 7-4.

Gettysburg scored their final run of the game in the eighth off a bases loaded single. In the bottom half of the eighth, Kenyon started the inning with two hit batters. Pinch hitter J.J. Conway moved the runners up on a ground ball to the right side before Groff grounded out to the first baseman, plating a run. On a sharply hit ball to the shortstop that popped out of his glove, Drew Robinson reached and scored Luke Meister from third, cutting the Gettysburg lead down to two.

In the final inning, Christian Harris entered from the bullpen to strike out the first two of the inning. Harris gave up a single, but a diving catch from Will Sturgeon in left killed the Bullets' momentum.

Looking to tie the game up, Rosen laced a single down the right field line. Gow reached on a second error by the shortstop in as many innings, placing runners on first and second with no outs. Following a strikeout, Meister grounded one to the shortstop who flipped to second base for the force but the throw to get Meister was too late. The home plate umpire called Meister out on the play on an interference call at second base, ending the game at 8-6 in favor of the Bullets.

Kenyon (2-4) looks to regroup on their off-day tomorrow before a rematch with Penn State Behrend on Saturday.
