Game Recap: Baseball |

Shoremen take two from Lords by a run

FORT PIERCE – The Kenyon College baseball team came up one run short in each game of their doubleheader with Washington College. The Shoremen erased a 6-1 Lords' lead to take game one 9-8 and walked off Kenyon in the bottom of the seventh to take game two, 5-4.

GAME ONE

Things looked to be going well for Kenyon starter Frank Lynch in the first inning as he sat the Shoremen down in order. In the bottom half, Lynch received a lead to work with. A pair of walks put runners on for Luke Meister. Meister singled with two outs to score Rosen from second base.

Lynch held Washington College scoreless for the next two innings. The Lords took advantage of a pair of Shoremen errors in the bottom of the third to plate their second run of the ballgame.

In the fourth, a two out RBI single for Washington College brought the game back within one. The Lords got that run back on Malcolm Gaynor's sacrifice fly to score Tripper Capps. Following the sacrifice fly, Nate Rosen singled in Will Sturgeon. Kenyon pushed their lead to 6-1 on Andrew Rabinowitz's two RBI double with two outs.

In the top of the sixth, Lynch loaded the bases to bring in Hopper Rowe from the bullpen. Rowe allowed a single and two walks, bringing the game to 6-4. Still in the lead, the Lords turned to Liam Rosengren to try and escape the pressure. Rosengren escaped the inning but not before giving up a fielder's choice and three consecutive hits. Going to the bottom of the sixth, the Shoremen stormed back to take a 9-6 lead.

Gaynor reached base on a hit by pitch before Rabinowitz walked. The Lords looked to get back into the game as Luke Meister hit a two RBI double to bring the game within one, 9-8. A groundout to the first baseman ended the Kenyon side and sent the game to the final inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Lords went down in order to end the game, 9-8.

GAME TWO

Trying to get the scoring started early, Gaynor hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Rabinowitz brought Gaynor in for the opening run on a groundout to second but that was all Kenyon mustered in the first.

Kenyon held on to their 1-0 lead until coming to bat in the top of the fifth. Capps led things off with a double and advanced to third when Drew Robinson reached on an error by the pitcher. Capps looked to score on a ground ball to the shortstop but got thrown out at home. Alexander Hoskins walked, loading the bases with two outs for Gaynor. Gaynor singled to score two and push the Kenyon lead to 3-0. A few batters later, Rabinowitz tacked on another to make the game 4-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Shoremen tied things up at four on four hits and a hit batsman.

With the game tied at four, Washington College looked to end things after the leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch. A single and sacrifice bunt put runners in scoring position, but a Kenyon intentional walk loaded the bases to bring the double play in effect. The next Washington College batter hit an RBI single and ended the game, downing the Lords, 5-4.

Kenyon moves to 5-6 on the season and faces Washington College in a full nine-inning contest on Thursday.
