Lords win offensive battle with Shoremen

FORT PIERCE, FL – After losing back-to-back games against Washington College by one run each, the Kenyon College baseball team got their revenge against the Shoremen in a full nine-inning contest on Thursday. The Shoremen and the Lords combined for 11 runs in the first inning as neither starter escaped the first inning.

In the top of the first, Malcolm Gaynor extended his hitting streak to six games with a leadoff single. Will Sturgeon followed Gaynor's single with a hit by pitch. With runners on first and second, Alex Gow cracked the scoreboard with a three-run blast, putting the Lords up 3-0. Andrew Rabinowitz advanced to third on an error by the right fielder, bringing up Luke Meister. Meister doubled to left field to score Rabinowitz and forced a pitching change by the Shoremen before an out was recorded. After a groundout by Tripper Capps, Drew Robinson walked. Ben Gimbel singled to center, scoring Meister from second and advancing Robinson to second. Alexander Hoskins flew out  to right but moved Robison up a base. Gaynor followed with his second hit of the inning to clear the bases and push the Kenyon lead to 7-0. The Shoremen got out of the inning as Gaynor was caught stealing.

Facing a large deficit, Washington College went to work against Kenyon starter Zach Frizzera. Frizzera retired the first hitter on a strikeout, but a double, hit by pitch, and walk loaded the bases. A two RBI double cleared the bases, bringing the game to 7-3. After a passed ball, a wild pitch on a walk brought the game within three, forcing a Kenyon pitching change in the first inning. Entering from the bullpen, Noah Rosenberg registered a fly out and a strikeout to get Kenyon out of the inning.

The second inning proved to be calmer as the Lords went down in order and Rosenberg retired three of the four he faced in the inning.

In the top of the third, Robinson followed a pair of ground outs with a single to center and stole second with Gimbel batting. Gimbel reached on an error by the shortstop to score Robinson from second. Hoskins singled but ended up stranded on a groundout to end the inning. In the bottom half, the Shoremen scored two off three hits, cutting the Kenyon lead down to 8-6.

Washington College tied the game up at eight in the bottom of the fourth on two hits. The Lords took the lead back in the top of the fifth on a bases loaded walk by Hoskins, a Gaynor RBI single, and a Sturgeon hit by pitch. Sturgeon's pitching change forced the Shoremen to go to their bullpen once more. Another bases loaded walk drawn by Alex Gow with no outs pushed in another run for the Lords. A triple-play halted the Kenyon momentum as the Shoremen escaped a bases loaded, no outs situation.

The Shoremen continued to stay in the game, scoring two on four hits in the fifth. Each team tacked on two more in their respective halves of the seventh. The Lords kept up their offensive pace, scoring a run in the eighth. In the ninth, Kenyon broke the game open on a bases-clearing double by Hoskins, bringing the game to 19-12.

In the bottom of the ninth, Washington College scored one, but a groundout to short ended the game.

In the 19-13 win, Gaynor, one of four Lords to register multiple hits, finished with five hits and three RBIs. Gow and Rabinowitz finished with four RBIs each.On the mound, Jake Davidson registered the win while Joel Biery earned the save.

Kenyon (6-6) wraps up their Florida trip with a doubleheader against Hood College tomorrow starting at 10 a.m.
